Brotherhood Of Reason
Description:
At dawn the bells rang, and I rose to a breakfast of bread and preserves. I spent the morning cleaning the common areas, but my mind was not on the task. Several Brothers even asked me at Midday if I was alright, for they could see my distraction. I assured them I was fine, and left early to get back to my studies. I believe I may be on the right track, but I dare not tell anyone quite what I am looking into. Some of the others would try and steal the credit if they knew. With what I translated this evening, I am sure I can get permission to travel to continue my work. This new place I've heard about, Beacon, sounds like it has extraordinary promise. I will finish my game of “Chess” tonight. I still think we have translated the rules wrong! Tomorrow, after dinner, I will present my findings and attempt to gain permission to leave these halls.
A typical day in an academy begins at dawn, when the members of the Order rise, have a simple breakfast, and by eight o’clock they are performing manual labor in service to the Order. This labor includes tasks as varied as tending to crops, washing clothing, and repairing buildings – whatever tasks that need to be done. While docents often oversee and coordinate larger tasks, it is not unusual to see the adjunct of the local academy working in the fields beside the adept and initiates. After the midday meal - often simple food that requires little effort to prepare, the members of the Brotherhood focus on their intellectual tasks. Lessons are held for the initiates. Adepts typically spend the afternoons copying manuscripts, or assisting docents with their research. Dinner occurs at seven o’clock; after which, the members of the Brotherhood have discretionary time, which is often used for presentations of inferred works, quiet reflection, formalized debates, and games of skill and intellect.
A bastion of learning hidden in the Range, the Brotherhood of Reason exists to preserve knowledge from the World Before. In their secret monastery, most members of the order have little need for the outside world. Their main point of interaction with the other factions stems from their universal literacy – a rare quality among the people of Karst, which makes them sought after by local rulers as administrators and private tutors.
